Your data is never sold.
1. What we collect
- Reports: the hex area, what you saw (type, size, terrain, hazards, notes) and when. Your device location is turned into a hex on your device; the exact coordinates are not saved or sent.
- Profile: the display name you choose, your points, streaks and activity. Use a nickname, not your full name.
- Visit statistics: Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page views without cookies and without building a profile of you.
- Server logs: like any website, our host processes your IP address and browser details to deliver and protect the site.
2. Where it is kept right now
During the current early version, reports and profiles are stored only in your own browser on your own device. Clearing your browser data deletes them. When shared maps launch, reports will be stored on our servers and this policy will be updated before that happens.
3. How it is used
- To show reports on the map and run claims, points and streaks.
- To keep the Service secure and to stop spam and abuse.
- To understand, in total, how the Service is used so it can be improved.
We do not sell or rent personal information, show ads based on you, or share it for others' marketing.
4. Services that see your requests
- Cloudflare: hosting, security and visit statistics.
- OpenStreetMap and OpenTopoMap: map tiles. Your browser asks them for map images, which shares your IP address and the map area you view.
- unpkg: delivers the map software to your browser.
5. Photos and what not to post
Do not include faces, license plates, house numbers, names or anything else that identifies a person or a home. We will remove content that does.
6. Children
The Service is not for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child under 13 has used it, contact us and we will delete what we hold. Teens 13 to 17 need a parent or guardian's permission.
7. Your choices and rights
- Delete local data any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.
- Ask us what we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, at contact@ihatewaste.com. We answer within 30 days.
- Residents of states with privacy laws, such as California, have these same rights, and we never sell or share personal information.
8. Security and retention
The site is served only over encrypted HTTPS with strict security settings. We keep information only as long as needed to run the Service or as the law requires. No system is perfectly secure.
9. Changes
We will post updates here and change the date at the top.
