Volunteer Waiver
Effective November 6, 2026
Cleanups are voluntary and risky.
Claiming a cleanup means you agree.
1. Voluntary participation
I am taking part in litter cleanups found through I Hate Waste on my own free will. I am not an employee or agent of I Hate Waste, and I receive no pay. I understand I Hate Waste does not organize, supervise, inspect or insure any cleanup or site.
2. Known risks
I understand cleanups can involve:
- Sharp objects, broken glass, metal, needles and syringes.
- Unknown or hazardous materials, including chemicals, batteries, drums, asbestos and human or animal waste.
- Heat illness, dehydration, sunburn, cold and sudden weather such as flash floods in washes.
- Rough or unstable ground, falls, lifting strain and overexertion.
- Wildlife and insects, including snakes, scorpions, bees and spiders, and harmful plants such as cactus.
- Vehicle traffic, railways, water, remote locations with poor cell service, and other people.
3. Assumption of risk
I knowingly accept these and all other risks, known and unknown. I am responsible for deciding whether a site is safe, for my own gear (gloves, closed-toe shoes, grabbers, water, sun protection) and for leaving if conditions are unsafe. I will not touch hazards; I will report them to the proper authority.
4. Property and permission
I will get permission before entering private land and will follow posted rules and local disposal laws. A report on the map is not permission to enter any property.
5. Release of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, I release, waive and agree not to sue I Hate Waste, Gear Websites, and their owners, volunteers and partners for any injury, illness, death, loss or property damage connected with any cleanup, except where caused by their gross negligence or willful misconduct. I agree to defend and hold them harmless from claims arising from my own actions.
6. Medical care
I am physically able to take part. In an emergency I authorize first aid and emergency medical treatment, and I am responsible for any costs.
7. Photos
I will not post photos showing other people's faces without their consent, or showing license plates, house numbers or names.
8. Minors and groups
- Volunteers under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian accept this waiver for them, and must clean up only with an adult leader present.
- A group leader who claims a cleanup for a group confirms that every member has accepted this waiver (or has a parent or guardian's acceptance) and that the group follows its own youth-protection and permission rules.
9. Agreement
I have read this waiver, understand it, and accept it by claiming a cleanup. If any part is found unenforceable, the rest still applies. Arizona law governs this waiver.
